     Sales & Use Tax Rate Changes Effective January 1, 2021



    Mississippi has a 7% state Sales Tax (get Seller's Permit) . Cities and towns may implement an additional tourism tax on restaurant and hotel sales. The city of Tupelo has a 0.25% tax in addition to other taxes. Restaurant and fast food tax is 9%. The city of Hattiesburg also has a 9% Sales Tax (get Seller's Permit) on restaurant and fast food.    

    Mississippi Sales and Use Taxes Sales Tax (get Seller's Permit) All sales of tangible personal property in the State of Mississippi are subject to the regular retail rate of Sales Tax (get Seller's Permit) (7%) unless the law exempts the item or provides a reduced rate of tax for an item. The tax is based on gross proceeds of sales or gross income, depending on the type of business. Before engaging in any business in Mississippi subject to Sales Tax (get Seller's Permit) , a permit or registration license is required from the Department of Revenue.
