Business Permit

A business permit ( same as a business license) is a government permission certificate
to operate a business at a certain location.  The reason you need it is because
the government checks for health or hazardous conditions at your business location
as well as tax you a flat tax ( about $0 to $100 per year that you need to pay in advance) and
also restrict you from excessive business activities such as business deliveries and business sings if you
operate out of your home. For a home business, you may need a home occupation and a business license
or one or the other only.

All businesses need a federal ID as well

A federal tax ID number is also called an EIN (Employer ID Number).
Even though it is  called "Employer," ID, it is also an Business ID for individuals ( like
the social security number but for business) corporation, LLC, partnerships.

All businesses need this one including when getting a seller's permit in some states. Independent contractors
need it as well to provide their clients so they will be issued a 1099 form to report independent contractor income.

As a sole proprietor, you can use it to open bank accounts, and pay employment taxes. As a partneship, LLC or corporation, you definitely need
one because it is the business ID.
